“Go Fly a Kite” & Water Sports at Texas City on Saturday, July 25th

The Texas City Kite Festival will be held from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, July 25th. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, sunglasses, sunscreen and water to  The free event takes place on the water at the junction of the Texas City Dike and the Levee (Skyline Dr.) and features competitions in kite flying, a kiteboarding hydrofoil race, and the world’s first-ever tanker surfing competition. Parking at the Levee or Dike is $5.00, with free overflow parking at the corner of Bay St. and Dike Rd. (Maps are available at the website.) Vendors will provide a variety of food from Gulf Coast BBQ to creative festival and food truck cuisine, drinks and frozen treats to cool off, and kites for all ages.

Each event will take place in a different location along the dike and levee system but all should be within walking distance. Spectators and participants are welcomed and encouraged for all events. The best place to view the Tanker Surfing Competition should be between mile one and mile three on the south side of the dike. Surfers should pass directly by spectators along these points. There will also be a demonstration of powered paragliding – a fabric wing driven by an ultra-light motor – by Texas WingNuts.

Only homemade kites are allowed in the ‘no fee’, free competition, but spectators who just want to join in the fun of flying will find a wide variety of kites available for sale or can bring their own.

All kite boarders with a hydrofoil are welcome to race, but will need to register either in advance of or at the event.

The Tanker Surfing competition is a great ride for a limited number of competitors and a great show for spectators. The best place to view the Tanker Surfing Competition should be between mile one and mile three on the south side of the dike. Surfers should pass directly by spectators along these points.

Detailed rules and categories for the events can be found at the event website. Registration for the Kite Competition will be from 11am -1pm in the black slingshot spider tent at the base of the Levee at the intersection of Dike Rd. and Skyline Dr. To become a competitor in the Hydrofoiling Race or Tanker Surfing, contact Phil Midler, phil@houstonkiteboarding.com
