A REALLY BIG MOVE and Road Closures on April 28th - April 30th

Local area residents should be aware of a REALLY BIG MOVE scheduled for Monday, April 28th through Wednesday, April 30th. Not only will there be road closures, but this will be something you don’t see every day. The NASA Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier will be on the road, traveling to its new home at Space Center Houston.

The NASA Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier has been going through severe modifications; being dismantled for the move from Ellington Field to Space Center Houston. The project to disassemble and safely transport the massive airplane was done in partnership with 30 private, public, and government organizations, many of whom did the work for little or no charge.

(View more photos of the NASA Boeing 747 on the Space Center Houston Facebook Page)
Thanks to extensive pre-planning efforts, no utilities are expected to be interrupted. The convoy will travel at night for the safety of our neighbors and the workers involved in this complex transfer, as well as to minimize the impact on local residents, the traveling public and businesses.

Moving at walking speed, the convoy will carry the disassembled Boeing 747 sections on six different trailers from Ellington Field. The largest section moving intact is the fuselage, measuring 25 feet wide, 35 feet high and over 190 feet long, which will travel on a Goldhofer multi-wheeled, self-propelled trailer. This may be the only time a Boeing 747 Aircraft will take three days to travel approximately 8 miles!

April 28, 2014, 9 p.m.: The convoy of 747 sections will depart Ellington Field via the gate at Dixie Farm Road and Highway 3;
April 29, 2014, Early Morning: The convoy is scheduled to park on E. Commerce Street near NASA Parkway; 9 p.m.: The convoy will resume, moving east on the westbound lane of NASA Parkway.
April 30, 2014, Early Morning: The convoy is scheduled to arrive at Space Center Houston.

New Entrance to League City's Hometown Heroes Park

Hometown Heroes Park was opened October 2012 with only one entrance via Dickinson Avenue. Dickinson Avenue is a narrow two-lane asphalt road with roadside ditches. There is no turn lane provided at the park driveway to remove the turning traffic form the non-park traffic, which can be busy when soccer games are played or other highly attended event occur.
A new entrance and traffic signal on League City Parkway (Hwy 96) will improve access to Hometown Heroes Park. The new address will be 1001 E League City Parkway, and will align with Tuscan Village Drive. This will make it so much easier for many to find the park. The side entrance will remain 2105 Dickinson Avenue. The new street is almost complete, but it may be April before the traffic light is installed.
For more information about Hometown Heroes Park, you can read more in these Brockway Blogs: In October 2012, Brockway Realty blogged After 3 Years of Waiting, League City’s Eastern Regional Park Opens October 22nd; in July 2013 League City, Name That Park! , and in February 2014, League City Council Approves Construction of New Pool.

Good news for residents of Pearland, Friendswood, and Alvin, as a new retail center boasting some mega tenants plans to move into town.  As cited in Houston Business Journals article http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/morning_call/2014/02/new-retail-center-with-mega-tenants-heads-to.html?surround=etf&ana=e_article; the Center at Pearland Parkway, being developed by Stream Realty Partners LP, will be anchored by Ross and Tj Maxx.  Located at the Northwest corner of FM 518 and Pearland Parkway next to a new H-E-B, this "development will further solidify this intersection as the dominant retail location in east Pearland" as stated by Ralph Tullier, managing director of Steams' retail division.

I-45 Ramp Reversal Project at SH-96 and FM-646

League City has announced the following road closure/construction by Texas Department of Transportation in a press release:

”The Texas Department of Transportation will close the southbound IH 45 entrance ramp at SH 96/ FM 646 permanently on Monday, April 21 to begin construction of a new exit ramp at the location. Along with the closure of that ramp, crews will also close one inside lane of the IH 45 southbound frontage road for approximately two months.

The work is part of a larger project to reverse the southbound entrance and exits ramps between SH 96 and FM 646. This means the existing on-ramp (closest to SH 96) will become the off ramp for IH 45 and the off ramp will become the on ramp (closer to FM 646).

Initially, work will focus on the building of the new IH 45 southbound exit ramp at FM 646, just south of SH 96. After this work is complete, the IH 45 southbound exit ramp at FM 646 will be closed permanently to make way for a new IH 45 southbound entrance ramp at SH 96. The project should be complete by Fall 2014.

The reversals of the ramps will alleviate congestion, improve access to the abutting properties and enhance safety along the frontage road and at both the SH 96 interchange and the FM 646 interchange. Because of the enhanced access, a secondary benefit is the improved access will make the vacant property in this area more desirable for commercial/retail development. Lastly, with the anticipated completion of Brookport Drive many of the vehicles traveling through the FM 646 interchange will be able to take an alternate route further reducing the congestion in the interchange.

Permanent Closure: IH 45 Southbound entrance ramp between SH 96 and FM 646:
  • Date: Monday April 21, 2014 at 8:00 AM
  • Temporary Closure: One Inside Lane (Entrance Ramp to IH 45) Between SH 96 and FM 646
  • Duration: Approximately Two Months: April 21 - June 21

A New “Welcome to League City” is Almost Complete

League City Council approved the construction of three new monument signs at the city entrances on FM 518, (to the west), Hwy 3, (to the north), and FM 270, (to the north). Council also approved an upgrade of the city’s information board located at Hwy 3 and Walker Street. All improvements were part of the strategic initiatives that came from the January 26, 2013 special council workshop. Each new ‘sign’ will have the new League City logo. The upgrades were posted on the city’s website.
Out with the old, and in with the new. The message board, located across from the Helen Hall Library has been installed. According to Kristi Wyatt, League City’s Director of Communications, the software for the message board was recently installed and staff is training on how to use the program. Ms. Wyatt says more information should be posted on this board soon.
Kristi Wyatt mentioned that Engineering is awaiting delivery of the three remaining signs. These ‘welcome signs’ are scheduled to be completed by the end of May.

Galveston County Fair & Rodeo Returns to Jack Brooks Park April 4th - 12th

Time again for family fun at the 76th Annual Galveston County Fair! If you are not familiar with the history of the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo, this information is found on their website: “The fair began in 1938 and was held at facilities in Runge Park located in Arcadia, Texas.  In the early 1980s, the County Fair had reached its limits of growth at Runge Park and plans began for a move to Jack Brooks Park located in Hitchcock, Texas. The move to Jack Brooks Park was completed in time for the 1984 Fair, and this is where the fairgrounds are currently located. The youth and the animal projects they exhibited are the foundation the Fair was built upon. This tradition continues today.

Many families look forward to the annual Fair & Rodeo. Volunteer committees work for several months planning different events and activities for everyone to enjoy during the fair as well as events that are held at other times throughout the year. The GCF&R also hosts "special" days for the community -Special Kids' Day, Schools' Day, and Senior Citizens' Day.  And we are very proud to award several thousand dollars in Scholarships each year to deserving high school seniors from Galveston County. We would like to thank all of the sponsors, buyers, volunteers and staff members who make it all possible.”

The Fair & Rodeo will be held from April 4-12, at the Jack Brooks Park, located at Hwy 6 in Hitchcock. 77563. Ticket Prices, admissions and park & ride information can be found on the fairs webpage. The daily calendar of events can also be found on the website. Besides all the family fun activities, musical entertainment will be available by Cody Johnson, Kevin Fowler, the Spazmatics, Wayne Toups, and many others. You can also find information about the Rodeo events and Cook-offs on the Events Page of the website.
