Texas City Amusement Park Holds Official Ground Breaking Ceremony

Announcements about the new amusement park and concert venue have been slow coming, but now Galveston County residents can stop holding their breath! Adventure Pointe’s official ground-breaking ceremony was held on November 14, 2015. The preliminary ground clearing had begun in October, but now the Adventure Pointe Team has shown their commitment toward bringing this highly anticipated amusement park to Texas City in Galveston County.

Adventure Pointe’s visionary and owner, Dr. Harvey Slusky (a local cardiologist), was on hand to use the ceremonial shovel to mark the event. Family entertainment has been a prominent business for prior Slusky generations.  Mr. Slusky’s father, Louis, had two separate Playland parks in Houston and Galveston in the late 1940s; his uncle had one in Nebraska; a cousin had a park in Oklahoma City and others in Denver own one which has been in existence for over a century.

Adventure Pointe Amusement Park & Concert Venue is located at 5500-5600 Gulf Freeway (HWY 45) Texas City. The Park will be nextdoor, just south from, the Texas City Tanger Outlet. The 35 acre site will host a thrilling and innovative theme park, a hospitality center with restaurants, retail and hotel accommodations, and an entertainment section complete with a state of the art concert venue.

The 18th Annual Dickinson Festival of Lights Opens on November 28th

Volunteers, (or are they elves?), have gathered to help get the holiday lights ready for the The 18th Annual Dickinson Festival of Lights. The Dickinson Festival of Lights Society, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) not for profit organization. This walk-thru holiday display is put together in the Paul Hopkins Park, located at 2716 FM 517 Rd East in Dickinson. The park will be open to visitors nightly beginning on November 28th thru December 31st, 2015.

Due to the small amount of parking available and the popularity of the displays, a FREE shuttle bus service has been established. FREE Parking is available at the Dickinson Plaza Shopping Center, (Exit 19 (HWY-517) I-45N feeder Rd) which is where the shuttle bus will pick up visitors to travel to the park, and return them from the park.

While at Paul Hopkins Park, guests can enjoy a leisurely pace walking around the many different themed light displays, stop by the Cookie Factory & the Blinkey Hut. Donations are welcome. There will also be an opportunity to have your photo taken with Santa! A concession stand will have snacks & drinks for sale, but you could also visit one of Dickinson’s many restaurants.

UT System Announces Major Houston Expansion, Other 'Quantum Leaps' as Part of Strategic Plan

Houston Business Journal
Olivia Pulsinelli, Senior Web Editor, November 5, 2015

Excerpt from Houston Business Journal - “The University of Texas System announced on Nov. 5 a comprehensive strategic plan full of "quantum leaps," including a major expansion in Houston.

One day earlier, the system’s board of regents approved the acquisition of more than 300 acres off Buffalo Point, about 3.5 miles from the Texas Medical Center. Although specific plans for the land have not yet been decided, Chancellor William McRaven called it a game changer for Houston, the UT System and the State of Texas.”

“This will not be a University of Texas at Houston. Rather, it will be an ‘intellectual hub’ for UT — an opportunity for all our campuses to take advantage of the Houston professionals in the fields of medicine, energy, engineering, business, aerospace, health care and the arts,” McRaven said in prepared remarks to the board of regents on Nov. 5.

Early next year, McRaven will convene a task force of civic leaders, legislators, academic and health presidents, faculty, students and regents, along with other constituents, to begin the planning process for the property.

“We have educational and research gems across our UT System portfolio that, if leveraged with key sectors of health, energy and business in Houston, will allow us to accelerate discoveries and expand research and educational opportunities — complementing our existing UT health institutions — and significantly grow our state’s economic competitiveness,” McRaven said in a Nov. 5 statement. … “
