2016’s Best & Worst Cities for Texas Families Ranked by WalletHub

WalletHub has released a report containing a list of ratings of the 2016 Best and Worst Cities for Texas Families; excerpts from that report are shown below.

“Texas is one of the largest states in the country, both in terms of square mileage and population, which should be no surprise considering everything is supposed to be bigger there. That’s certainly true as far as the steaks, cowboy hats and football stadiums are concerned, but what about the homes, school systems, salaries and all of the other important factors that truly make life larger in a given place?” …

“In order to help Lone Star residents and those interested in joining the herd settle down in the right spot, WalletHub compared the 112 of the largest cities in Texas based on 21 relevant metrics that speak to their suitability for families of all types. This includes measures such as the number of playgrounds per capita, the violent crime rate and the divorce rate. Below, you can find the results as well as a detailed methodology and a Q&A with a panel of leading experts.”

The following Bay Area cities were ranked in the list of 112 cities:
#9 Pearland; #17 Friendswood; #19 League City; and #87 Texas City.

WallHub’s Methodology: To help identify the most family-friendly cities in Texas, WalletHub compared the state’s 112 largest cities in four categories: 1) Family Life & Fun, 2) Education, Health & Safety, 3) Affordability and 4) Socioeconomic Environment.”

We did so using 21 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was scored from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the most favorable conditions for families. We then used the weighted average of these individual-metric scores to calculate an overall score for each city, with which the cities were ultimately ranked.” …

WalletHub Sources:Data used to create these rankings were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Council for Community and Economic Research, SchoolDigger.com, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Education Agency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Renwood RealtyTrac and WalletHub research.

Friendswood Ranks High in Best Suburbs and Safe City Lists

The City of Friendswood, from the city website: Friendswood receives multiple accolades.

The City of Friendswood has recently been awarded two new honors: one of the Best Suburbs to Live in the Houston Metro and one of the Safest Cities in Texas.

Niche ranked Friendswood as the 11th Best Suburb in the Houston area. They based their list on crime, public schools, cost of living, job opportunities, and local amenities data from a variety of government sources.

SafeWise announced that Friendswood has moved up to Number 10 (from 14 last year) on their 2016 Safest Cities in Texas list.

SafeWise reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics and population data for cities with more than 10,000 residents. They narrowed down the list, based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. “To further level the playing field, we calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city,” according to the SafeWise website.

These honors are the result of generations of people working hard to preserve the principles of Friendswood’s founders who believed in faith, family and education. It is a privilege to credit our City Staff, especially the Police Department, along with business leaders and the hundreds of citizens who volunteer to make Friendswood so deserving of these rankings,” said Friendswood Mayor Kevin Holland.

“We are grateful to Niche and SafeWise for compiling these rankings. Where the City of Friendswood placed is the direct result of teamwork within the Police Department and with residents. That is what makes Friendswood a safe place to live, work and raise a family,” said Robert Wieners, Chief of the Friendswood Police Department.

TxDOT Lane Closures Around Downtown Houston Begin

Some people jokingly wonder how many generations have worked on Texas Interstate 45. But there is no joke, because the main route through the 4th largest city in the United States IS always under construction. One of the newest major reconfigurations has begun. Many agencies have made announcements to keep the public aware for future travel through Houston or on their way to work downtown.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) posted the following information on their Facebook page: “The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close the Houston Avenue southbound and Allen Parkway eastbound entrance ramps to I-45 southbound on Friday, July 8, to begin construction on new ramps that will improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

There will also be additional closures to prepare for the bridge and ramp construction at this location.

The Houston Avenue bridge will be completed in late September/ early October of this year and the Houston Avenue/ Rusk and Allen Parkway entrance ramps to I-45 southbound will be open in late November/ early December.

Also be sure to visit the Houston TranStar website for a complete list of closures related to this construction project and other Houston District closures. All closures are subject to change due to inclement weather.”

The press release from TxDOT, “Two Entrance Ramps To I-45 Southbound In The Downtown Houston Area To Be Reconstructed”, can be found on their website.

For more information on scheduled lane closures, visit the Houston TranStar website at www.houstontranstar.org for a complete list related to this construction project and other Houston District closures.
