Southeast League City is Location for Newest Development

There will soon be a lot of “buzz” about League City’s newest (and possibly largest) residential development, Lakes of Quail Pointe. The location of the development is south of League City Parkway, north of FM 646, east of South Shore Blvd, and west of Hwy 146 (near the subdivisions of Mar Bella and Whispering Lakes Ranch).

Partial view of Conceptual Land use Plan for Lakes of Quail Pointe, prepared for Empire Continental Land, L.P. by *Kerry R. Gilbert & Associates (*web link for map)

Jerry LeBlanc, of Galveston Bay Investors LLC, has proposed the new development. According to a recent article in The Daily News, “LeBlanc has also been involved with the Hidden Lakes development and last year took on an 87-acre development on the east side of Texas City, which plans to develop 300 homesites.” LeBlanc is quoted as saying ‘he hopes to start moving dirt in the next six months. The goal is to have the first lots on the ground by the start of the 2017-2018 school year.’

League City’s City Council approved an application (June 14, 2016) to rezone the area for single-family residential development with lot sizes of 5,000 to 10,000 square feet. The 210-acre tract of land will be divided into 600 lots, with homes starting about $275,000.

More information from the announcement about the Lakes of Quail Pointe can be found on The Daily News webpage.

2016 Hurricane Season Information for Bay Area Residents

The Harris and Galveston County Offices of Emergency Management and Clear Channel Outdoor joined together to raise awareness of the coming hurricane season. The billboards were set to countdown to June 1st, which is the (calendar) start of hurricane season. The countdown ‘clock’ and website information was located on six billboards provided by Clear Channel Outdoor at no cost to the counties.

Hurricanes can be a major threat to the Houston-Galveston region when tropical storms form in the Gulf of Mexico. The 2016 Hurricane Season began early in January with Hurricane Alex, and the second storm formed in late May, Tropical Storm Bonnie which came onshore along the South Carolina coast. The list of names for the 2016 Hurricane Season is shown below.

The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) works closely with the State and local jurisdictions to aid in planning for the hurricane season and offers resources for residents. A page of Preparedness Resources can be found on the Council’s website. Residents can locate their local city office of emergency management on this page to keep up-to-date with their city’s announcements.

If a hurricane threat should mandate a need to evacuate, the 2016 evacuation map for Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston, Harris and Matagorda can be found on H-GAC website. Hurricane tracking charts are available for free distribution from local newspapers, local television stations and online. There are also apps available for cell phones for residents to track storms and also to receive storm updates from the National Hurricane Center, which is a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS).

Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th. New and old Bay Area residents should always be aware and prepared for the possibility of a threat from a tropical storm/hurricane; or, simply said in a quote from Stephen King:

"There's no harm in hoping for the best as long as you're prepared for the worst."
— Stephen King, Different Seasons

Kids Cooking Club with Chef Jimmy – Making a Difference

In 2012 James Graves, known to the community as Chef Jimmy, partnered with Rev. Robin Reeves to form a Kids Cooking Club to motivate kids and their families to work together, laugh together, and make healthier food choices.  What started with only a handful of kids, the Kids Cooking Club now averages 30 to 60 kids and their parents.  Chef Jimmy’s vision was to serve these kids and their families while creating a closer community.  He was convinced that the kitchen at St. George’s Episcopal Church was the place to make it happen.

Chef Jimmy is an Advertising Sales Representative at The Post, a Faith based newspaper in Texas City, Texas dedicated to local news and events, but spent years prior to that in the restaurant industry.  He says “God put it on my heart to go back and start cooking and to do it for kids”.

His message is delivered to these families the second Saturday of every month at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Texas City.  It’s here that these families learn to work together to discover healthier food choices and learn positive eating habits.  Learning positive eating habits at a young age can reap benefits for a lifetime.  Besides, it’s a lot more fun when you’re making it yourself!

The food donations for the cooking class come from The Galveston County Food Bank, along with several other contributors.  The next cooking class is on June 11th starting at 12:00 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 510 13th Avenue North, Texas City, TX 77590.  For more information on the Kids Cooking Club you can follow them on Facebook.

Thank you, Chef Jimmy, for making a difference!
