Independence Plaza at Space Center Houston to Open on January 23rd

Something big will open at Space Center Houston on Saturday, January 23rd. The newest international landmark, Independence Plaza, will open its doors to a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience featuring the first Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, NASA 905 (Boeing 747), and the high-fidelity replica of the Space Shuttle.

But first, some background about how all this came together. In April 2011, NASA announced the new retirement homes for the four remaining space shuttles -- three historic orbiters and the program's test vehicle. The Johnson Space Center was selected to receive the 122.7 foot long by 54 foot tall (37.4 by 16.5 meter) shuttle mockup.

The shuttle mockup arrived via barge from Florida on June 1, 2012, traveled through the Clear Lake Channel, docking on the bank of Clear Lake and then slowly transported via flatbed down NASA Road 1 to Space Center Houston. The Houston Chronicle article, “Space shuttle replica docks at Johnson Space Center”, contains a photo gallery that chronicles that journey. A contest was held to name the replica and “Independence” was the winning entry
After its final flight into Houston, NASA 905 was dismantled for transport. During two evenings, those sections were taken down Highway 3 and then down NASA Road 1 to Space Center Houston. The next step was to put the sections together and then position the NASA 905 into place.

The delicate “mating” of the shuttle mockup to the top of the aircraft was completed successfully. After that major task was completed, work began on completing the plaza and the visitor’s access ramp was built.

The countdown clock has officially begun and you can check the number of days, hours, etc. left until the grand opening date of the new international landmark, Independence Plaza at the Space Center Houston website.Space Center Houston is located at 1601 NASA Road 1, Houston.

Local Bay Area Schools Compete for 2016 Tommy Tune Awards

Houston ~”Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is pleased to announce the show titles and dates for the 45 Houston-area high schools participating in the 2016 Tommy Tune Awards. Created by TUTS in 2002, the Tommy Tune Awards recognizes and rewards excellence in the production of musical theatre by high school students and their teachers.”

“We are very fortunate as this year’s Tommy Tune Awards competitors include a wide variety of schools,” says Bob Lawson, TUTS’ Director of Education.  “Our programming is designed to offer this unique opportunity for artists, educators and students to work together, and bring recognition to the next generation of musical theatre. No matter the size of school or the style of show produced, our participants share one common element: the art of musical theatre as a way to connect, collaborate and communicate. We can’t wait to see what they create for 2016.”

During the 2015/16 school year, a team of Houston-based theatre professionals will evaluate the participating high schools’ productions and announce the winners at a Tony Awards-style ceremony on April 19, 2016 at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The event will highlight musical numbers from the nominated shows and celebrate the winning performers, directors, choreographers, orchestras and designers.

TUTS’ Tommy Tune Awards are named for Broadway legend, Houston native and Lamar High School alumnus Tommy Tune.  A performer, director and choreographer with more than 50 years of stage experience, Tune received nine Tony Awards … and was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 by President Bush.” (From the TUTS Website)

Activity Along Clear Creek in League City is ‘Newport on The Bay at Marina Riverbend’

League City ~ Preparations for construction can be seen along Interstate 45 across from the FM 518 exit in League City. The first development along Clear Creek as part of the River Bend project will begin with a 203-unit luxury multifamily complex. Atticus Real Estate purchased the complex, which is meant to be part of a mixed-use project that would include retail, offices, a 100-slip marina, townhouses with water views, restaurants and a boutique hotel.

Artist rendering of the proposed development that would include a 203-unit multifamily complex, boutique hotel along with residential, retail and restaurants on Clear Creek in a project by Atticus Real Estate.

Humphreys & Partners Architects L.P. CEO, Mark Humphreys, is quoted in the Galveston Daily News Biz Buzz: “Humphreys describes the design of the complex as modern and edgy. The complex will include a rooftop deck and views of Clear Creek. The entire project encompasses what’s known as a Planned Urban Development that includes housing, recreation and commercial centers contained in one subdivision. When built out, the development will be like a small town, he said. “It will be a place to live work and play,” he said. While the multifamily complex is underway, the remaining development still is in the planning stages.”

Humphreys & Partners Architects, L.P. have created a video that offers a better look of this complex; that video is posted on YouTube.
