The Bay Area Celebrates Mardi Gras

Celebrating Mardi Gras has become a tradition in the Bay Area; each city or Krewe has their own unique event which usually takes place before the major events in Galveston.

January 31, Texas City, The Inaugural Mainland Mardi Gras Parade will start at 2 pm, on 33rd Street at the Carlos Garza Sports Complex. The parade route will end at the Showboat Theater. (Free entry) More information can be found at mailandmardigras.com or by calling 409.457-8080.

January 31, Texas City Rotary Club 5th Annual Mardi Gras Mainland Gala, begins 7 pm at the Doyle Convention Center, 2010 5th Ave. N.,Texas City. More information can be found at their website.

January 31, Kemah, Krewe Du Lac Royal Mardi Gras Ball will be held from 7pm to 11pm, at Landry’s on the Kemah Boardwalk. Kelly McGuire will provide musical entertainment for the evening.

February 6, Kemah, Kick Off Party,Bakkhus Taverna605 6th Street, in Kemah at 6 pm.

February 7, Kemah, Galloway Gallop, The run begins at 8 am with 5K and 10k races followed by a Kids K dash at 9 am. This is the thirteenth year for the popular fun run, which benefits The Galloway School, an accredited, non-denominational, non-profit private school for grades PK-3 through 8th located in Friendswood, TX.

February 7, Kemah Mardi Gras Parade, Krewe du Lac parade lines up at 10am behind T-Bone Tom's Restaurant and rolls @ 11am from the corner of 7th and Bradford. Free to enter a golf cart, car, pick up, flatbed, walking club...well, you get it. Best spots to view the parade are on Bradford between 7th & 5th or on Kipp between 5th and 9th.

16th Annual “Yachty Gras” Calendar of Events

Are you ready to celebrate Mardi Gras season with friends and neighbors? The following calendar of events has been announced for the 16th Annual Yachty Gras, “Chance of the Sea”, for more information visit their website.

Yachty Gras Kick-Off Party will be held on January 29, from 7 pm to 11 pm, at Kemah Flowers & Company, located at 609 Bradford, Suite 103, in Kemah.

Yachty Gras Skippers Meeting will be held on February 7, 10 am, at the Sundance Grill II in Waterford Harbor Marina,800 Mariners Drive, in Kemah. At least one member from each yacht entry is required to attend. This meeting will brief all on specific information that might affect the parade route. Entry numbered signs will be handed out at this time. Judging will be based on theme, music, lighting, creativity, costumes, and enthusiasm.

16th Annual Yachty Gras Grand Night Boat Parade will begin at 7 pm on February 7th.

Festively decorated boats will parade down Clear Creek Channel by the Kemah Boardwalk where revelers will be showered with beads and doubloons. Boat owners are encouraged to form private “Krewes” and decorate their boats to a particular theme.

Clear Creek ISD Livestock Show and Auction – January 27th - 29th

Clear Creek ISD high school students have worked hard on their projects throughout the year; now they will compete during the 33rd Annual CCISD Livestock Show and Auction, at the district’s Westside Agriculture Barn, located at 2155 West NASA Blvd, Webster. This show is open to the public. Judging will held January 27th-28th; buyer registration and dinner followed by the auction is scheduled for Thursday, January 29th. The entire schedule can be found on the school district’s website.

Pearland Offers Family Fun at the 19th Annual “Winterfest”

If you are looking for family-fun activities in the area, consider attending the 19th Annual Winterfest in Pearland on Saturday, January 31st. The event will be held at the Pearland Recreation Center & Natatorium, located at 4141 Bailey Road, from 10 am to 5 pm.

High School Musicals, Now Showing

In elementary school, students are taught how to work together and learn music and maybe movements to enhance a story. By the time students reach high school, there are some who want to pursue the fine arts through drama and musicals.

“Polar Bear Plunge” to be Held in El Lago on January 24th

Residents of El Lago will get their chance to participate in an event not for the “faint of heart” on Saturday, January 24th. The Polar Bear Plunge will be held at the city pool, located at 411 Tallowood Drive in El Lago, from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

Free to all residents, jump in the pool waters, (bring your own towel), and then enjoy the provided refreshments, (hot cocoa and hot dogs), and warm up by the fire pits.

Arbor Day Celebration in Nassau Bay on January 23rd

“The Nassau Bay Garden Club invites all residents to the celebration of Arbor Day on (Friday) January 23rd at 11:00am in front of City Hall. Partnering with the Parks Department and children from St. Thomas Episcopal School, the Garden Club will host the celebration of the addition of a new tree to the front of City Hall.

After studying various possible trees, a Japanese Blueberry tree was selected. This hardy evergreen tree is attractive in all stages of its development. There will be songs from the students, a poem, a short history of Arbor Day, and words from city officials and council members.”

The Nassau Bay City Hall is located at 18100 Upper Bay Road, Suite 200. The Nassau Bay Garden Club is is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded in 1964.

League City’s Public Safety Building Open House Scheduled – January 17th

The construction of League City’s Public Safety Building, located at 555 West Walker St., began in the fall of 2012. Full occupancy was expected to be completed in August 2014, and an open house planned for November 2014 (but was postponed).

The City has now announced they will host an Open House for the public on Saturday, January 17th, from 9 am to 1 pm. Demonstrations by the LC Police Department and LC Volunteer Fire Department will be presented, guided tours of the facility will be available, along with food and family fun activities.

School District Rankings All Around Houston

For those of you looking to make a move to Houston and it's surrounding areas, or those already living here, according to Chron.com over 70 school districts were ranked and here are where some in our area stand in the rankings. Friendswood Independent School District ranked No. 1 and was followed closely by Clear Creek Independent School District at No. 4!
