TxDOT Lane Closures Around Downtown Houston Begin

Some people jokingly wonder how many generations have worked on Texas Interstate 45. But there is no joke, because the main route through the 4th largest city in the United States IS always under construction. One of the newest major reconfigurations has begun. Many agencies have made announcements to keep the public aware for future travel through Houston or on their way to work downtown.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) posted the following information on their Facebook page: “The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close the Houston Avenue southbound and Allen Parkway eastbound entrance ramps to I-45 southbound on Friday, July 8, to begin construction on new ramps that will improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

There will also be additional closures to prepare for the bridge and ramp construction at this location.

The Houston Avenue bridge will be completed in late September/ early October of this year and the Houston Avenue/ Rusk and Allen Parkway entrance ramps to I-45 southbound will be open in late November/ early December.

Also be sure to visit the Houston TranStar website for a complete list of closures related to this construction project and other Houston District closures. All closures are subject to change due to inclement weather.”

The press release from TxDOT, “Two Entrance Ramps To I-45 Southbound In The Downtown Houston Area To Be Reconstructed”, can be found on their website.

For more information on scheduled lane closures, visit the Houston TranStar website at www.houstontranstar.org for a complete list related to this construction project and other Houston District closures.

Independence Plaza at Space Center Houston to Open on January 23rd

Something big will open at Space Center Houston on Saturday, January 23rd. The newest international landmark, Independence Plaza, will open its doors to a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience featuring the first Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, NASA 905 (Boeing 747), and the high-fidelity replica of the Space Shuttle.

But first, some background about how all this came together. In April 2011, NASA announced the new retirement homes for the four remaining space shuttles -- three historic orbiters and the program's test vehicle. The Johnson Space Center was selected to receive the 122.7 foot long by 54 foot tall (37.4 by 16.5 meter) shuttle mockup.

The shuttle mockup arrived via barge from Florida on June 1, 2012, traveled through the Clear Lake Channel, docking on the bank of Clear Lake and then slowly transported via flatbed down NASA Road 1 to Space Center Houston. The Houston Chronicle article, “Space shuttle replica docks at Johnson Space Center”, contains a photo gallery that chronicles that journey. A contest was held to name the replica and “Independence” was the winning entry
After its final flight into Houston, NASA 905 was dismantled for transport. During two evenings, those sections were taken down Highway 3 and then down NASA Road 1 to Space Center Houston. The next step was to put the sections together and then position the NASA 905 into place.

The delicate “mating” of the shuttle mockup to the top of the aircraft was completed successfully. After that major task was completed, work began on completing the plaza and the visitor’s access ramp was built.

The countdown clock has officially begun and you can check the number of days, hours, etc. left until the grand opening date of the new international landmark, Independence Plaza at the Space Center Houston website.Space Center Houston is located at 1601 NASA Road 1, Houston.

Lone Star Flight Museum Proceeds with Plans to Move Inland

The Lone Star Flight Museum has been located in Galveston at Scholes Field,2002 Terminal Drive, since 1990. The museum has become home to a collection of historic aircraft from the World War II era. Some of those planes include a B-17 Flying Fortress, P-47 Thunderbolt, and an F-22 Raptor. Along with the static displays, guests can purchase a flight aboard its T-6 Texas, open-cockpit biplane PT-17 Stearman and T-41 Mescalero. Educational tours are also available for students of all ages.

But all of this came to a halt, in 2008,  when Hurricane Ike’s high winds and high water pummeled the Galveston coastline. Some of the aircraft were flown further inland, but the museum’s structure sustained damage and the storm surge brought in 6-8 feet of saltwater. Substantial damage was made to historical static displays, but major damage was made to the aircraft by the saltwater, the muck that came along with the storm surge, or by floating into walls.

The decision was made in 2011 when the Houston City Council approved a 40-year contract with the museum for 14 acres at Ellington Field, part of the Houston Airport System. Although the museum had become one of Galveston’s featured tourist attractions, the museum needed a location that would keep the historical displays/aircraft protected.

On November 9, 2015, the Lone Star Flight Museum broke ground on it’s new $35mil museum at Ellington Airport. The 130,000 square-foot location, located at 11551 Aerospace Avenue, will house the historical aircraft, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, a technology aviation learning center, and opportunities to purchase flights aboard several aircraft.

While local residents observe the development of the Houston Spaceport at Ellington Airport, the construction of the new museum will also be taking place. The museum is projected to be open by February 2017.

UT System Announces Major Houston Expansion, Other 'Quantum Leaps' as Part of Strategic Plan

Houston Business Journal
Olivia Pulsinelli, Senior Web Editor, November 5, 2015

Excerpt from Houston Business Journal - “The University of Texas System announced on Nov. 5 a comprehensive strategic plan full of "quantum leaps," including a major expansion in Houston.

One day earlier, the system’s board of regents approved the acquisition of more than 300 acres off Buffalo Point, about 3.5 miles from the Texas Medical Center. Although specific plans for the land have not yet been decided, Chancellor William McRaven called it a game changer for Houston, the UT System and the State of Texas.”

“This will not be a University of Texas at Houston. Rather, it will be an ‘intellectual hub’ for UT — an opportunity for all our campuses to take advantage of the Houston professionals in the fields of medicine, energy, engineering, business, aerospace, health care and the arts,” McRaven said in prepared remarks to the board of regents on Nov. 5.

Early next year, McRaven will convene a task force of civic leaders, legislators, academic and health presidents, faculty, students and regents, along with other constituents, to begin the planning process for the property.

“We have educational and research gems across our UT System portfolio that, if leveraged with key sectors of health, energy and business in Houston, will allow us to accelerate discoveries and expand research and educational opportunities — complementing our existing UT health institutions — and significantly grow our state’s economic competitiveness,” McRaven said in a Nov. 5 statement. … “

The Federal Aviation Administration Approves 10th Spaceport in Texas

Houston Business Journal“Prepare for liftoff: Houston approved for spaceport”
By Olivia Pulsinelli – June 30, 2015

“The Federal Aviation Administration granted a launch site license to make Ellington Airport the 10th commercial spaceport in the U.S., the Houston Airport System announced June 30.

Now, HAS can turn its attention to establishing the required infrastructure and support facilities needed to accommodate reusable launch vehicles, which will launch horizontally like commercial aircraft, rather than vertically.

The spaceport could be used to launch micro satellites, train astronauts, conduct zero-gravity experiments, manufacture spacecraft and other potential activities, HAS said.”

“HAS started aggressively moving forward with its spaceport plans two years ago, when the Houston City Council approved a $718,000 contract for a consulting firm to study how Ellington Airport can obtain a spaceport launch site operator’s license. However, HAS has looked into developing a spaceport in Houston since early 2011.

“Houston will play a lead role in commercial space operations in the 21st century,” Houston Mayor Annise Parker said in a statement. “We believe a licensed spaceport in Houston will not only serve as an economic generator for the city but also enhance Houston’s well-deserved reputation as a leader and key player in the aerospace industry.”

Meanwhile, NASA's Johnson Space Center also plans to have a significant role in the future of commercial spaceflight, JSC Deputy Director Kirk Shireman told the Houston Business Journal recently.”

Do you know the locations of all the Spaceports? The list might surprise you:
  • (1) Florida – Spaceport Florida, Cape Canaveral
  • (2) Florida – Cecil Field Spaceport, Jacksonville
  • (3) Virginia – Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, Wallops Island
  • (4) New Mexico – Spaceport America, White Sands
  • (5) Oklahoma Spaceport
  • (6) Mojave Air and Space Port
  • (7) California – California Spaceport, Vandenberg Air Force Base
