German-Based Market, Lidl, Submits Plans to Build in League City
Business Insider posted an informative article (written by Hayley Peterson) in September 2016, “A German grocery chain that crippled its rivals in the UK is about to invade the U.S”. The following segments from that article explain more about Lidl:
“Lidl wouldn't reveal how many stores it's planning to open, but sources told the commercial real-estate firm CoStar that the company will open as many as 150 US stores by 2018. The company currently has 10,000 stores in 26 European countries.
Lidl has already snatched up leases in dozens of US cities, according to local-news reports, and it's seeking store managers in areas including Burlington County, New Jersey; Richmond, Virginia; Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina; Greenville, South Carolina; and Augusta, Georgia.” …
“Lidl's US stores are expected to be between 30,000 and 36,000 square feet, which is about twice the size of an Aldi store, but still much smaller than a traditional supermarket like Kroger, which averages about 165,000 square feet. Like rival Aldi, Lidl keeps prices low by limiting inventory to a lean selection of private-label items, versus traditional supermarkets that tend to carry several different brands of a single product.”…
“Most of the stores' products are displayed in their shipping cartons to make restocking quick and easy. That means fewer workers are needed on the sales floor. Lidl additionally saves money by requiring customers to bring their own shopping bags and bag their own groceries”
For more information about Lidl, check out their website now or check the City of League City website for future news.

League City’s Five Corners Realignment - October Update
The City of League City, City Manager Mark Rohr – City Manager’s Update, October 28::
“Work on the Five Corners project is moving forward. Building demolition and relocation of the electric utility were completed last month.
Removal of old power lines and the relocation of any remaining utilities are expected to occur throughout the next few weeks. The city will relocate water lines in late November through early December prior to TxDOT taking control of the right-of-way.
Successful right-of-way acquisition and franchise utility relocation allowed the city to petition TxDOT to accelerate the bid opening to January, which TxDOT has approved. Construction is expected to begin a few months after bid opening.”
“Total project costs are estimated at nearly $9 million, which includes approximately $5 million for the six land acquisitions made by the city. TxDOT will pay about $1.9 million of the $2.8 million construction cost.” …
“(City Manager) Rohr says the current congestion at Five Corners can be attributed, at least in part, to the steady growth in League City, which has been gaining about 1,000 homes a year. League City is nearing a population of 103,000. That number is projected to exceed 200,000 within the next 20 to 30 years.
The Five Corners project is included in League City's "Roadmap to the Future," which identifies short-term, mid-term and long-term goals for the city. It also serves as a report cards of sorts for residents, who will be able to monitor the city's progress. The document was presented to City Council in February 2015.
As of August 2016, 64 percent of the short-term goals, 70 percent of the mid-term goals and 50 percent of the long-term ones were underway, the city reports. Along with transportation improvements, Roadmap to the Future identifies downtown revitalization as one of its key short-term goals.”
Brockway Realty has published the following blogs about the Five Corners Project: “Five Corners” Public Meeting Set for Thursday, July 23rd , July 22, 2015; Residents Anticipate Less Congestion at the “Five Corners”, August 8, 2016; Updates Announced About the “Five Corners” Realignment in League City , August 19, 2016: League City’s “Five Corners” Construction Begins with Demolition , September 21, 2016.
