In Honor of the 4th of July, Let’s Give our Veterans a Lower Rate on Their New Home!

The Texas Veterans Land Board is one of 5 programs in the country that rewards their service to our country with a lower mortgage rate.  Currently, that rate is just below 4% on a 30 year fixed rate mortgage.  Veterans who have a service related disability of more than 30% can even get an additional 1/2 % off of that rate. These programs are available for Veterans who live or have served in Texas and their surviving spouses.

Under these programs, reservists who are called to active duty can also have their interest payments waived for the period they are on active duty plus an additional 3 months in order to help their families with expenses while they serve our country.  They would only be responsible for principal and escrow payments.

These programs are only available through certain lenders and can be applied to VA, Conventional, and FHA loans.

Fourth of July Festivities Planned in the Bay Area All Events Listed Will Be Held on Friday, July 4th

LEAGUE CITY - Citizen Appreciation Day - League Park, located at 512 2^nd Street, is where the festivities for the annual 4^th of July Citizen’s Appreciation Day will begin at 11:30 am. The Mayor, City Council, Parks Board, and Parks Recreation staff members will be serving refreshments in appreciation of the citizens of League City. Music and a variety of live entertainment will be happening throughout the day. All concessions (including hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy) are FREE!

EL LAGO- 4th of July Parade – Floats, bikes and walkers in the parade will be at 8:30 am at Ed White Elementary School. The parade will begin at 9 am and follow a route through the city, ending at McNair Memorial Park, located at 499 Lakeshore Dr. Picnic in the Park - Bring your favorite patriotic picnic to McNair Park for a relaxing afternoon with neighbors. The city pool will have open admission for all residents from 10 am to 9 pm.

SEABROOK– Seabrook Fourth of July Kids Parade - This annual community event is held at Rex Meador Park located at 2400 Hammer Street. All kids from the Seabrook community are invited to march in the parade that takes place on the trail outlining Meador Park. Children may ride their bikes or tricycles in the parade and after, they can enjoy several activities including face painting and moon walk. Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided.

KEMAH–4th of July Parade and Hot Dog Party – Kemah’s annual patriotic parade begins with the Children’s Bicycle Parade at 9:30 am, followed by the Main Parade at 10:30 am. Both parades will start at the 6^th and Bradford City parking lot. There will be a Dixie Land Band, with hot dogs, drinks and desert served by the Kemah Lions Club immediately after the main parade at the Jimmy Walker Community Center until 1:00 pm.

NASSAU BAY– This year’s annual 4^th of July Parade will be judged for different patriotic themes, see the City’s Facebook Page for more information. Bring your lawn chair to The Park at Nassau Bay located at 18900 Upper Bay Rd to enjoy the fireworks show when dark.

TEXAS CITY –  July 4th Celebration – The City will celebrate the holiday with a parade that begins at 10 am. Festivities will continue with music entertainment by Funksion at 7pm. A fireworks show will begin at dark at Bay Street Park.

WEBSTER - July 4th Festivities – An evening of patriotism, family fun and entertainment will be held at Texas Avenue Park, located at 17100 N. Texas Ave.; festivities will begin at 5 pm. A Veterans ceremony will kick off the evening, followed by bingo, entertainers, inflatables, concessions, games, free watermelon & snow cones. A fireworks show will begin at 9:15 pm.

The Kemah Boardwalk will be holding its Fourth of July Celebration on Independence Day. It will include live music and patriotic fireworks show over Galveston Bay. For more information, visit the Kemah Boardwalk website.

City Spotlight: The City of Webster is “Linked to the Future”

The City of Webster is conveniently located midway between Houston and Galveston along Interstate 45, and close to Clear Lake. The city is bordered by Houston on the north, League City on the south, Friendswood on the west and Nassau Bay on the east.

Webster was founded in 1879 by James Webster and called Gardentown when a colony of English immigrants originally populated the area. When the interurban rail stop between Galveston and Houston was established, the farming industry grew in Gardentown. In the early 1900’s a small community of Japanese immigrants established rice farming as the key crop for the region. Soon fruit, dairy and livestock ranches were prevalent in the area. In the 1930’s, petroleum was discovered at the Webster-Friendswood Oilfield.

Webster was considered a village until it was incorporated in 1958 just before NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) announced it would build the Manned Space Center (later renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center) there. The cattle fields soon became home to many aerospace companies and employees of NASA. The city has grown along with NASA and the diverse space programs supported there. Webster now serves as the Gateway to the Johnson Space Center and the entire Galveston Bay Area. The City’s current motto, “Linked to the Future”, illustrates the pride Webster has of its history with the aerospace industry.

Webster has also earned the title of “Medical Center of the South” since the Clear Lake Regional Medical Center was built there in 1972. Medical facilities continue to build in Webster, such as: Texas Children’s Health Center of Clear Lake, Texas Oncology-Deke Slayton Cancer Center, Houston Physicians’ Hospital, and Kindred Hospital-Clear Lake.

The 2000 census reported the population of Webster at close to 10,000 citizens. There are established single-family homes, a variety of condominium and apartment options, and a master-planned waterfront community to attract potential residents. Webster is also home to a variety of popular restaurants, shopping, hotels and entertainment. Attractions such as: Space Center Houston, Baybrook Mall, Main Event, Cinemark 18 and Star Cinema Grill offer family fun and relaxation.

Update on League City’s Mandatory Water Rationing Plan – July 1st

The City of League City has posted the following update to the (postponed) Waterline Shutdown that was not held on June 24, 2014.

“League City is to enact Stage 3 of the City’s Drought Contingency Plan on Tuesday, July 1 from midnight to midnight. This stage is to be enacted due to on-going construction of the City’s largest water distribution facility located at 18530 SH 3. This construction-related activity is necessary for the installation of multiple isolation valves needed for construction to continue. The date is subject to change, based on weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Residents are asked to limit water to essential indoor use only on these days. The Drought Contingency Plan lists several mandatory restrictions. Violators could face fines of $500 plus court costs each day that one or more restriction is violated.

(Listed) Below are the water rationing restrictions for Stage 3 of the City’s Drought Contingency Plan:

• Irrigation of landscaped areas is absolutely prohibited.
• Use of water to wash any motor vehicle, motorcycle, 4-wheeler, boat, trailer, airplane or other vehicle is absolutely prohibited. Commercial car washes that utilize water recycling are allowed to continue to operate.
• Use of water to wash down any sidewalk, walkway, driveway, parking lot, tennis court, or other hard surface area is absolutely prohibited.
• Flushing of gutters or permitting water to run or accumulate in any gutter or street is absolutely prohibited.
• Washing down any building or structure for purposes other than immediate fire protection is absolutely prohibited.

The City of League City will continue to update residents on www.leaguecity.com, through our Blackboard call system, social media sites, and on electronic message boards throughout the city. The patience of League City residents and businesses is greatly appreciated during this phase of the Drought Contingency Plan.”

713 - 281- 832 - 346, What Do These Set of Numbers Have in Common?

You might guess the first three sets of numbers as area codes in Houston and the Bay Area, and you would be right, but what is 346?

The Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas has announced the addition of area code 346 to accommodate the continued growth in the area. The new area code will exist along with the current area codes, meaning new phone/cell number requests as of July 1^st will be assigned the 346 code.

The counties affected are: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Waller. When dialing the new area code there will be no difference as the current numbers; the 10-digit dialing for local calls will still be required.

Side-by-Side Luby’s-Fuddruckers Restaurant Being Built in Webster

Do you want green beans with that burger or would you rather have a shake with that meatloaf? It may sound like a strange request, but you will be able to make those selections when the new Luby’s-Fuddruckers opens at the Baybrook Shopping Center along the Gulf Freeway in Webster.

Houston based Luby’s purchased Fuddruckers in 2010 and built the first side-by-side restaurant in east Houston in 2011. The concept has proven popular and more dual-concept locations have followed in Katy, the Texas Medical Center area, and Pearland.

The 12,000 square foot Luby’s-Fuddruckers is located in front of Mardel and Hobby Lobbyalong the Gulf Freeway at the Baybrook Shopping Center. The restaurant is projected to open early Fall 2014.

Lunar and Planetary Institute Hosts Family Space Day Event – June 27th

The Lunar and Planetary Institute will be hosting a special Family Space Day event on Friday, June 27, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Solar system exploration activities will be featured. This free event is for children ages 8-13 and their families. Everyone is welcome!

The Lunar and Planetary Institute is a research institute that provides support services to NASA and the planetary science community, and conducts planetary science research. City Spotlight: Texas City – A City of Industry, and So Much More

Texas City is located on the southwestern shore of Galveston Bay seven miles from Galveston, and eleven miles from the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston County. The city is bordered on the north by Moses Lake, which is fed by Moses Bayou, a freshwater stream; the lake drains into Galveston Bay, which borders the city on the east.

The Shoal Point Lighthouse was located at Half Moon Shoal, two miles out in Galveston Bay. A historical marker which commemorates the early community is located at Bay Street Park. In 1911, an election was held to incorporate the settlement formerly known as Shoal Point. After W. P. Tarpey was elected the first Mayor, Shoal Point officially became the City of Texas City.

Texas City is a vibrant city with an estimated population around 50,000. It is impossible to talk about Texas City without talking about the Texas Oil industry in which Texas City has carved out a solid and integral niche as a refinery town. Texas City is a busy deep water port as well as a petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing center. The Port of Texas City, operated by the Port of Texas City/Texas City Terminal Railway, is the eighth largest port in the United States and the third largest in Texas. The Texas City Terminal Railway Company provides an important land link to the port, handling over 25,000 car loads per year.

Because of its ample room to grow, Texas City and the north side of Galveston Bay as a whole, has an abundance of housing options. The community of Grand Cay Harbour is located on a pristine stretch of Galveston Bay shoreline; while Pearlbrook and Rain Song also showcase the housing market in the city.

The Street of Memories, in the old downtown district, has been rejuvenated through economic development and local business owners. Many buildings have taken on an authentic look of yesterday when 6th Street thrived as the heart of the community. The Bayou Golf Club is a public recreation facility; along with an 18-hole championship golf course on 200 acres, facilities include a practice driving range, practice putting green, practice chipping green, pro shop and snack bar and grill. The city operates numerous parks, some of which are a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The Texas City Prairie Preserve is a 2,300-acre nature preserve located on the shores of Moses Lake opposite the city. The terrain of the preserve includes prairie and wetland habitats. The preserve includes 40 acres of public access areas which include campsites. The Texas City Dike, the world's longest man-made (5 miles) fishing pier, is part of Texas City's flood control system and a haven for local fisherman, boaters, and water enthusiasts.

Shopping in the area boomed when the Tanger Outlet Mall opened with over 80 designer outlets located on Interstate 45, off Holland Road. Next door to the mall is the 60,000 sq.ft. Buc-ee’s Family Travel Center, which will be completed in 2014. The largest Buc-ee’s to date will have about 56 gas pumps and is expected to bring in about 5,000 customers a day.
