The First Annual “Ragin Cajun Festival” in Kemah this Weekend

The Kemah “Ragin Cajun Festival” will take place on Friday, May 16^th, through Sunday, May 18^th, in the city parking lot in the Lighthouse District, (601 Bradford Street). Celebrate this weekend enjoying delectable crawfish, alligator and gumbo served with Cajun spices, as well as plenty of beverages. Nothing would make the weekend more complete than dancing to live music! Local and national bands are expected to entertain; this event is being produced by Gulf Coast Festivals.

The weekend event will be held Friday, 5pm to 10pm; Saturday, 12noon to 11pm; and Sunday, 12noon to 6pm. Adult admission is $8 per person; children under 12 enter free. More information can be found at Gulf Coast Festivals Event Page.

League City Launches New Outreach Effort in “City Hall in the Park”

The City of League City invites residents to learn more about their municipal government and share their opinions at upcoming monthly meetings held in their neighborhoods.

City Manager Mark Rohr will be implementing the City Hall in the Park program starting next week. The informal monthly meetings, held the third Thursday of every month this summer, from 6-8 p.m., will feature informative updates by the City Manager and others. It will also feature a question and answer session that allows residents to share ideas about the City and the communities they call home. The meetings are casual and are to be held in neighborhood parks, community clubhouses and other locations throughout League City. “We hope to engage the community, create productive dialogues, solve community issues and build partnerships through this new program,” said City Manager Mark Rohr.

‘The Sweet Life of Confectionery’ Opening Soon at Walding Station in League City

League City residents have been watching and waiting for change to come to (the now defunct) Perkins Station. New owners have revived the strip of buildings, located on Perkins Street and Main Street (FM 518) into Walding Station, across from League Park. The ‘anchor’ business is ‘The Sweet Life of Confectionery’ which is an ice cream parlour, candy factory and coffee shop.

When I stopped by Walding Station late in March, I spoke with individuals connected to ‘The Sweet Life of Confectionery’ and was told about an antique car display and the possibility of wine events. Remodel of the building has been longer than anticipated due to unforeseen circumstances, but according to those involved with the business, they are back to getting the business ready for opening soon. More information will come when they announce their opening day.

Clear Creek ISD Exceeds State Expectations

“The Clear Creek Independent School District and all 43 campuses scored well above the state’s standards regarding student achievement, student progress from year-to-year, closing the achievement gap, and postsecondary readiness.  

The State introduced a new accountability system based on four categories. The means in which each category is calculated by the State is complicated, but essentially a school and school district must have achieved a certain percentage in each area or higher to be recognized as a Met Standard district or school. The State utilized student performance on the STAAR exams, STAAR performance growth of specific student groups over two years, high school completion rates, and the percentage of students who graduate on the State’s Recommended and Distinguished plans to determine a campus and district rating. The District’s Performance Index Report, see below, demonstrates CCISD exceeded the State’s index score for student achievement by 38 points, the State’s index score for student progress by 17 points, closing the achievement gap index score by 25 points, and postsecondary readiness by 16 points. Nine campuses earned an academic achievement distinction in Reading/English Language Arts, seven campuses earned an academic achievement distinction in mathematics, and 17 campuses earned a distinction for student progress.  Distinction designations are awarded to the top 25% of campuses that are similar to each other from across the state.

Under the new Texas accountability system, a school and school district can only be rated as Met Standard or Needs Improvement. This is a departure from the traditional ratings of Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable and Unacceptable.

“While the names of the ratings have changed, our mission has remained the same, and that is to ensure all students graduate college and career ready,” said Dr. Greg Smith, Superintendent of Schools of the Clear Creek Independent School District. “This transition from TAKS to STAAR has been a herculean effort on the part of our teachers, students, and parents. Yes, the State’s system is confusing, but the simple message to walk away from on this report card is that we are not complacent; we will continue to meet the needs of all children, and raise our own expectations every year. That is the CCISD Way.” …”

Horse-Drawn Carriage Routes Approved by Kemah City Council

Earlier this year, The Kemah Carriage Company had to stop offering rides down the streets of Kemah because their permit had expired. They are now back in action and ready to take visitors on three different routes, after approval by the Kemah City Council. Along with the approval of the permit and routes, a staging area for carriages on 7^th Street was agreed upon.

The carriage routes now offer visitors options of 10, 20 and 30 minutes rides:

• 10 Minute Route: Leave Kipp archway and travel south to 4th street, turn on Bay travel south to 5th street, travel west to Kipp and then north on Kipp back to archway.
• 20 Minute Route: Leave Kipp archway travel south to 7th street, turn east and travel to end of street, turn around and travel back to Kipp turn north and travel back to Kipp archway.
• 30 Minute Route: Leave Kipp archway travel south to 7th street, turn west and travel to Bradford, turn south and travel south on Bradford to 9th street turn west on 9th street and travel to Harris, turn north and travel 8th street, turn east and travel to Kipp. Turn north and travel back to Kipp archway.

Seabrook Icon Getting a New Neighbor: Tookie's Seafood

From the Bay Area Citizen: “As far as Seabrook culinary institutions go, Tookie’s is an icon. The burger stand will soon have a new neighbor as Tookie’s Seafood officially broke ground at 1102 Bayport Avenue on March 6, right next door to Seabrook’s popular burger haven.

“It’s a big day for Seabrook,” said Seabrook Mayor Glenn Royal. The restaurant will be built on the former lot of the Seabrook United Methodist Church, so it was appropriate to begin the groundbreaking ceremony with an invocation and some words from the church’s current pastor, Tony McCollum. “We’ve seen all kinds of miraculous things happen as God has worked through the lives of people here and one of my hopes is that we see the multiplying of fishes and loaves for you guys with Tookie’s Seafood,” he said.

Tookie’s owner Barry Terrell talked about his vision for the new restaurant: an open kitchen for patrons to watch cooks prepare on a mesquite wood grill; New Orleans-style grilled oysters and fresh gulf seafood.

The original Tookie’s opened in 1975, and was a staple for years before being destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Terrell and his wife, Melissa, took ownership of the burger stand after the original owner was forced to close for good. Reopened in 2011, Tookie’s regained its footing in the community, and now with Tookie’s Seafood, the Terrells hope to start a new Seabrook tradition.

Terrell pointed to an office that has been a taste-testing lab for a year. “We’re kind of sick of tasting food, we’re ready to start building a restaurant,” he said. He also talked about the long journey to make the project happen and thanked the city for support. “This has taken a long time to get going, and the city of Seabrook has done everything it can do to get this going,” Terrell said. “The delay has not been because of them, it’s been a little bit of everything. We’re just glad to be here and get it off to the next step.”

That next step is to create a thriving business in the community. “You see these restaurants have these big ground breaking events and a year later, they’re out of business,” he said. “We’re going to try not to let that happen.” Tookie’s Seafood is expected to open this fall. Celebrate Family Fun at the 60th Annual League City Village Fair & Texas Music Festival, May 8th - 10th

The 60^th Annual Village Fair & Texas Music Festival will be held on Friday, May 8^th through Sunday, May 11^th, at Walter Hall Park, located at 807 Highway 3 N, League City. The fair is coordinated by the League City Lions Club. Home Town Events from the past will be reintroduced during this year’s fair: Lemonade Booth, Dunking Booth, Bingo, Business Expo, Fireworks, Village Fair Jail, and a community parade. The parade is to be held Saturday, May 10 at 9 a.m. and is to begin at the Crowder Funeral Services and League City Church of Christ parking lots (similar to the annual Holiday in the Park parade). The fire department is to participate in recognition of its 75th anniversary, and the police department has also been invited.

The Texas Music Festival is a family-friendly event with a special Kids Zone featuring more than 30 Carnival rides and Attractions. The League City Lions Club is donating the Mega Teen Night (Saturday, May 8^th) pre-sales to the 3 League City High Schools’ Project Graduation. A Barbecue Cook-Off will be held on Saturday. The Safari Run & Obstacle Course, supporting the Perry Family YMCA, will be held on Sunday, May 11^th.

Annual Kemah Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off (May 3) and Blessing of the Fleet (May 4)

The Annual Ceremonial Blessing of the Fleet is scheduled to transform Galveston Bay at the Kemah Bridge into a lavish traditional parade of shrimpers, the yacht crowd, day sailors and thousands of dock watchers. The Boat Parade to be held Sunday, May 4th, at 2pm, on the Clear Creek Channel.  Come and watch the festive display of different types, shapes and sizes of colorfully decorated boats as they pass in review along the Kemah Boardwalk celebrating this year's theme being “PIRATES”!.

One by one boats will parade past the Cadillac Authentic Mexican Restaurant on the Kemah Boardwalk, where each boat will receive a Blessing from both an officiating Priest and Minister. Every boat is welcome and encouraged to participate; no decoration is required to receive the Ceremonial Blessing.
