A friendly reminder from Brockway Realty:

Daylight Savings Time will end at 2am on Sunday, November 1st; don’t forget to set all your clocks back 1 hour. This is also a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors.

Excerpt from almanac.com: “Credit for Daylight Saving Time belongs to Benjamin Franklin, who first suggested the idea in 1784. The idea was revived in 1907, when William Willett, an Englishman, proposed a similar system in the pamphlet The Waste of Daylight.

The Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system in 1915 as a fuel-saving measure during World War I. The British switched one year later, and the United States followed in 1918, when Congress passed the Standard Time Act, which established our time zones. This experiment lasted only until 1920, when the law was repealed due to opposition from dairy farmers (cows don’t pay attention to clocks).

During World War II, Daylight Saving Time was imposed once again (this time year-round) to save fuel. Since then, Daylight Saving Time has been used on and off, with different start and end dates. Currently, Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday of March and ends at 2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November.”

Excerpt from the event’s website: “Tour the scenic and picturesque countryside of the Texas upper coast roadways while visiting the bay area towns of Baytown,Anahuac, Galveston, Texas City, Bacliff, Kemah, Seabrook, and La Porte. Be part of the fascinating environment of the many bay coves and inlets while cycling with your friends and family on a 2-day tour of Texas' coastal assets. The overnight stay in Galveston, Texas at Moody Gardens will be the high point of the day's journey and promises to relax and re-energize the rider for the Day 2 excursions. On Day 2, the riders leave the island to return to the main land via the Galveston Bay Causeway and will continue to explore the coastal region - cycling through Texas City, Kemah, Seabrook, and La Porte before concluding the ride at Royal Purple Raceway where it started.”

Meet Your City’s First Responders During ‘National Night Out’ – October 6th

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. This year, Texas residents will celebrate the 31st Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015. Every year, residents come out by the hundreds to join their neighbors at neighborhood block parties all across the city.

National Night Out is designed to:
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • Generate support and participation in crime efforts
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations
  • Let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
During the event, residents in neighborhoods throughout Texas and across the nation are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks are examples of what might be planned throughout the city and nationwide.

For more information about National Night Out in your neighborhood, please contact your local Police Department. To learn more about NNO and the commmunity-buliding, view the programs website.
